More and more traffic today is being encrypted -- using either HTTPS or Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection of the content.
Some falsely believe that encryption means the end of video optimization. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Video sessions can still be identified using Server Name Indicator (SNI) inspection and other techniques, and video resolution can be reduced. The technique is particularly effective for Adaptive Bit Rate (ABR) streams, which dominate the video landscape today.
The result? Savings rates can be as high or higher than with transcoding! All while maintaining an excellent quality of experience (QoE) for subscribers.
